The clients were renovating their Oakland Hills home and wanted a new front door with sidelights — more light at the entry, but with some privacy from the street. Stained glass answered both. They both loved Art Nouveau, and the wife's inspiration for the floral element was the California poppy. The design fills two full-height sidelights and a three-panel transom. Poppies in warm orange with green foliage climb through the upper portions of each panel, stems following the characteristic curvilinear lines of the style. Below, the composition opens into flowing curves that carry the eye down to geometric base elements at the foot of each sidelight. Small red diamond accents are scattered through the surrounding grid, adding warmth throughout. The textured background glass provides the privacy the clients wanted while still letting light through.
